Prayers for Roseburg

Prayers for Roseburg Shooting

To the people of Roseburg, Umpqua Community College, and the community as a whole: Know that we are with you in your sorrow, loss and fear, and offer healing prayers for your tomorrow.

Dear Friends,

Once again, our nation is reeling from a senseless act of gun violence, which this time has struck very close to home. As our president has reminded us, we have the power to do something about this. I commend his remarks to your thoughtful consideration, and action. As people of faith, at times like these we immediately bare our hearts and souls to God. I find the following litany helpful in that regard, and invite you to pray it with me.  Read more

Prayers of the people 10-4
Let us call upon God’s Spirit to fill all creation with the glory of the risen Christ, saying:
Spirit of peace, be with us.
As the church labors in the name of Christ crucified, that all may come to know the wideness of God’s mercy, we pray: Spirit of peace, be with us.
As world leaders strive to overcome obstacles to world peace, we pray:
Spirit of peace, be with us.
As the chief pastor of our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters, chose to be called after your servant Francis, we give thanks for his visit to our country, for his continued humble service to all your children, we pray: Spirit of peace, be with us.
As societies undertake programs to preserve natural resources and reduce wastefulness, we pray: Spirit of peace, be with us.
As families work to foster harmony, well-being, and spiritual unity among all members, we pray: Spirit of peace, be with us.
As Christians reach out to the economically poor and sick, as did St. Francis, we pray:
Spirit of peace, be with us.
As Franciscan communities throughout the world continue to give vitality to the charism and ministry of their holy founder, Francis, we pray: Spirit of peace, be with us.
As Jesus said “take my yoke upon you”, may all in any need be relieved and protected especially [N.], we pray: Spirit of peace, be with us.
As we return to the earth our beloved dead – especially Mark and Roger – in the sure and certain hope of resurrection, we pray: Spirit of peace, be with us.
Presider: God, indeed heaven and earth are full of your glory through the presence of your Spirit. On this memorial of your humble servant, Francis, we call on your redeeming love to fill us with every spiritual blessing. Grant our prayers in the name of Jesus, the Lord. Amen.

The Prayer of Saint Francis

Prayer of St. Francis (1)
Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love;

For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
It is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life.

Prayers 9-27

We have heard today of the cost of discipleship. That we may be empowered to bear the name of Christ, let us pray for ourselves and for the whole world, saying:

Lord, hear our prayer.

The church of God is fragmented; we need the healing of the Holy Spirit. Let us pray for the church.
Lord, hear our prayer.
